Christmas in Japan

What do the Japanese eat for Christmas dinner? The answer is chicken, especially Kentucky Fried Chicken. The Japanese adopted the celebration of Christmas from the West, but previously there were not many customs associated with it besides presents and a special Christmas cake. In 1974, KFC started advertising chicken for Christmas. The idea came from a foreign customer saying that he eats chicken on Christmas while in Japan because turkey is not available. It is quite rare that a company's advertising campaign is so successful that it becomes a Japanese custom. Japan is the only country in which KFC offers set meals for Christmas. The most popular item is called the, "Party Barrel," which includes chicken, salad and a cake. Even though it has to be ordered in advance, the stores still get long line-ups around Christmas

Halloween is a fun time for kids of all ages.
Here are some tips to make your Halloween safe, as well as fun:

Safe Trick-or-Treating

Make sure young children are accompanied by an adult or responsible teenager when they go door-to-door.

If you can't accompany your children, instruct them to trick-or-treat in their own neighborhood and in well-lighted streets.

If children are going to be out after dark, make sure they carry a flashlight.

Teach your children to use the sidewalks if they can. If there are no sidewalks, walk on the left side of the street facing cars.

Know which friends your children will be with and which route they are taking.

Leave your porch light on so children will know it's OK to visit your home.

Instruct children never to eat anything until they are home and the treats have been carefully examined. Cut and wash fruit before eating. Throw away anything unwrapped.

Check the wrappers of commercial treats for evidence of tampering.

Call the police if there are any suspicious treats.

Costume Safety

Look for the label Flame Resistant.

Avoid costumes with big, baggy sleeves or billowing skirts.

Choose costumes that are light and bright enough to be visible to motorists.

Costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping.

Children should wear well-fitting, sturdy shoes. High heels are not a good idea.

Hats and scarf’s should be tied securely to prevent them from slipping over children's eyes.

A natural mask of cosmetics is better than a loose-fitting mask that might restrict breathing or obscure vision.

Sword, knives, and similar costume accessories should be of soft and flexible material.

Decorate costumes and treat bags with reflective tape.

Help keep the holidays happy for everyone.

What is Bullying?

Dan Olweus, creator of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, provides us with this commonly accepted definition for bullying in his book, Bullying at School: What We Know and What We Can Do:

"A person is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons, and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself."

This definition includes three important components:

1. Bullying is aggressive behavior that involves unwanted, negative actions.
2. Bullying involves a pattern of behavior repeated over time.
3. Bullying involves an imbalance of power or strength.

Types of Bullying

Bullying can take on many forms. As part of the Olweus Bullying Questionnaire, students are asked if they have been bullied in any of these nine ways:

1. Verbal bullying including derogatory comments and bad names
2. Bullying through social exclusion or isolation
3. Physical bullying such as hitting, kicking, shoving, and spitting
4. Bullying through lies and false rumors
5. Having money or other things taken or damaged by students who bully
6. Being threatened or being forced to do things by students who bully
7. Racial bullying
8. Sexual bullying
9. Cyber bullying (via cell phone or Internet) Learn more

Why Students Bully

Information about bullying suggests that there are three interrelated reasons why students bully.

1. Students who bully have strong needs for power and (negative) dominance.
2. Students who bully find satisfaction in causing injury and suffering to other
students.
3. Students who bully are often rewarded in some way for their behavior with
material or psychological rewards.

We are "Superhero's"

We use our power for good not evil, like Superhero's . This is what I teach my young students but it applies to everyone. I hold my students to a higher standard. This is what we do as parents with our children and this is what I do as a Sensei . We set that standard high and want them to meet or even better exceed that mark. At the end of every class we recite the dojo kun and I wonder how many really understand what they are repeating. My philosophy has been and always will be that karate should make you feel good about yourself not stressed or depressed or worried. When you enter the dojo the outside world goes away. We all put on the same white uniform and we are there for only one-thing and that is to improve ourselves (karate-do) through hard training. We help each other, we encourage each other, we celebrate in victory and console each other in defeat. We are family. We are there for each other. Family sticks together.

Next time you recite the Dojo Kun listen to yourself. Try and understand what you are saying. Don't just repeat it like a parrot. It really means something.

Seek perfection of character
Be faithful
Endeavor to excel
Respect others
Refrain from violent behavior

Sensei Preston Carter

I found some interesting magazine covers from back in the day. Sensei Preston Carter was Sensei Hodgkiss's Instructor. Sensei Carter taught in the Trenton NJ area back in the 60s and 70s. He was a bouncer in a bar and one night, if I recall the story correctly, he evicted a couple of drunk patrons from said bar. They returned to the bar and shot Sensei Carter and paralyzed him from the waist down. He continued to train, not letting his disability slow him down. He was famous for his complicated breaking demos even in a wheelchair. I just wanted to pass along some of our family history. Sensei Carter passed away in 1977.

Concussion

What is a concussion?
A concussion is an injury to the brain. It's usually caused by a blow to the head. Most of the time it doesn't involve a loss of consciousness.

What are the signs of a concussion?
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Confusion
• Ringing ears
• Nausea
• Vision disturbance
• Loss of balance
• Memory loss (amnesia)
• Difficulty concentrating

How is it diagnosed?
First a doctor examines you. The doctor will also get information from people who were there when the concussion happened. This is very important, especially if you're confused or if you lost your memory of the injury. The doctor will test your strength, sensation, balance, reflexes and memory. In more serious cases, your doctor will want to get special x-rays of your head, called computed tomographic scans or magnetic resonance images.

Does medicine help?
The treatment for concussion is rest. If you have a headache, you can usually take acetaminophen (brand name: Tylenol). Always ask your doctor before you take any medicine if you've had a concussion.

What should I watch out for?
• Stiff neck
• Severe headache
• Repeated vomiting
• Confusion that gets worse
• Difficulty walking, speaking or using your arms
• Convulsions
• Unusual sleepiness

When can I return to sports?
You should never return to play while you have any signs of concussion, like headache or dizziness. If your concussion was very mild, you may be allowed to return to play after 15 or 20 minutes. If you had memory loss or loss of consciousness, you may not be able to return to play for one to two weeks. After a severe concussion, you may not be able to return to play for a month. If this wasn't your first concussion, your return to play may take even longer.

What are the risks of returning to play too early?
A player returning too early could suffer from "second impact syndrome," which may be fatal. This problem is caused by a loss of the automatic control of blood vessels to the brain. Never return to a sports activity until a doctor clears you.

Are there any lasting effects to a concussion?
Most people get better after a concussion without any permanent damage. People have signs of concussion for weeks to months. Repeated concussions could cause permanent damage. After several concussions, your doctor may talk with you about changing sports.

A survival exercise to recognize you always have 'something in reserve'
In choosing a career in law enforcement we have chosen a life which presents challenges that often will take us to that mud room between life and death

Make a tight fist and hold it while you count down, “five, four, three, two, one.” Now make an even tighter fist and hold it, counting three, two, one. Good. Now relax your fist. What did you observe from that little exercise? It’s a very good bet that even though you made a tight fist the first time, you were able to conjure up even more energy to make the fist tighter.

The brain is an exquisite tool which is naturally hardwired to facilitate your survival. Even though you consciously made the fist a “tight” fist, you subconsciously held some of your strength in reserve, just in case. It is important to note there nearly always is a reserve left if one chooses to access it. At one time or another, the trainers and coaches in your past may have shouted for you to “Dig Deep!” — urging you to call upon your reserve — and when you were urged to do so you found you had more to give.

American Flag FYI

When displayed vertically or horizontally against a wall, the stars should be at the top and to the flag's own right.
The flag should never be used as a receptacle for carrying, delivering or holding anything.
When displayed over a street, the flag should be hung vertically with the stars to the north or east. If hung over a sidewalk, the stars should be farthest from the building.
When flown with other flags on separate poles, the American flag should be placed to its own right (the observer's left). No other flags may be larger, and none should be placed above it. The American flag should be the first raised and the last lowered.
When displayed indoors, the flag should always be placed to the right of any speaker or staging area.
When displayed with a group of flags, it should always be at the center and at the highest point.
When used with one other flag, it should be placed to its own right and its staff should be in front of the other flag's staff.

The Force Science research team that explored officer exhaustion through a unique set of experiments in Canada last September has now issued its official findings--first presented in detail in the Force Science Certification Course conducted in Wisconsin this past week (4/18-4/22) and scheduled for integration into future courses--with these significant conclusions:

• Less than 60 seconds of all-out exertion, such as an officer might expend in trying to control a combative offender, can deplete the average LEO's physical reserves and put his life in peril;

• Environmental awareness and memory are also affected adversely, hampering an involved officer's ability to deliver accurate, detailed statements and testimony once a desperate fight is over;

• Even officers in top condition are not immune to the rapid drain of physical prowess and cognitive faculties resulting from sustained hand-to-hand combat.

"The bottom line," says Dr. Bill Lewinski, executive director of the Force Science Institute who headed up the research team, "is this: If an officer can't resolve a struggle very quickly, a tactical withdrawal or swift escalation to a higher level of force may be necessary and justified for personal survival. And investigators and courts need to understand that an officer who doesn't provide details surrounding a major physical conflict is not necessarily being deceptive, malicious, or uncooperative."

I remember the anticipation and excitement standing at the bottom of these steps. I never thought that I would see this in person. I wanted to savor everything about it. The air was so clean and crisp but not cold. It was quiet except for a few muffled voices. At the top of the steps we stopped and asked for directions. Kevin saw the shrine first and I walked up to him slowly we both just stood there and smiled, not speaking we had no words, we just smiled. One of my favorite moments in life.

William J. Hodgkiss, of Doylestown, died on Thursday, July 29, 2010, at his home with his family by his side after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 70.He was the beloved husband of 51 years to Nancy L. Carpentier Hodgkiss. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late William and Euphamia Kelsey Hodgkiss. .Bill was a life long resident of Bucks County a graduate of Delhaas High School Class of 1958. He retired from the Army Corps of Engineers, Department of Defense after 26 years of service.A proud veteran of the United States Navy Sea Bees his was called to active duty during Desert Storm and retired after 24 years of service to his country as Chief Petty Officer.After his retirement from the Navy, Bill, a professional land surveyor, started his survey practice. Throughout his career he served on many planning commissions, zoning boards and for H.A.R.B. in three different Bucks County communities. In 1968, he formed the Shotokan Karate Association at the Lower Bucks YMCA, where he was the director and held a 7th degree black belt. The association is the largest Karate association on the East Coast, with 18 clubs in three states.He also gave his time and talents to baseball and was member of the North Penn Baseball Umpire association and umpired many middle and high school games.Since his retirement Bill has enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Europe, Australia and Russia. He has been very present to his grandchildren and their endeavors and motivating them to find them selves and succeed.In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his children and their spouses; Holly Duffy and her husband Ron of Newtown, Cindi Succa and her husband Larry of Warminster, Barbara Fleischut and her husband Steve of Doylestown, Michael Hodgkiss and his wife Beth of Buckingham, he is also survived by one brother James and three sisters, Marilyn, Nancy, Kelly and his six dear grandchildren, Ryan, Sean, and Sarah Duffy, Tyler and Amanda Fleischut and Laura Succa and anxiously awaiting the birth of his seventh grandchild.Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of his Life on Tuesday evening, Aug. 3, 2010 from 6 p.m. until Words of Remembrance at 8:30 p.m. Interment will be held privately at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown.In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory may be made to Lower Bucks YMCA 601 South Oxford Valley Road, Fairless Hills 19030.

On June 12, 1972 I stepped into Sensei Hodgkiss's dojo located at the Lower Bucks County YMCA in Fairless Hills. I followed him to the Salvation Army in Appletree, to Truman High School in Bristol, to Gallee Village on Penn Valley Road, to his dojo's in Newtown. I missed one class from the time that I started till shodan and that was for a good reason, it was a Led Zeppelin concert. I watched, I listened, I read every thing that I could get my hands on pertaining to the martial arts. I trained with the best and some famous martial artist's, yet none compare to Bill. He was my guide, a mentor and an inspiration to me on my journey of a thousand miles. He has moved on now, a little bit ahead of us, a little further down the path. God Bless and Rest in Peace Sensei. You will be greatly missed.

CRITERIA FOR DECISION

1.The Kata must be performed with competence, and must demonstrate a clear understanding of the traditional principles it contains. In assessing the performance of a contestant or team the Judges will look for:

a. A realistic demonstration of the Kata meaning.

b. Understanding of the techniques being used (BUNKAI).

c. Good timing, rhythm, speed, balance, and focus of power (KIME).

d. Correct and proper use of breathing as an aid to KIME.

e. Correct focus of attention (CHAKUGAN) and concentration.

f. Correct stances (DACHI) with proper tension in the legs, and feet flat on the floor.

g. Proper tension in the abdomen (HARA) and no bobbing up and down of the hips when moving.

h. Correct form (KIHON) of the style being demonstrated.

i. The performance should also be evaluated with a view to discerning other points.

j. In Team Kata synchronization without external cues is an added factor.
